Holy cow! I had the most amazing time with The Real Workshop on location in Utah!
When I found out that this amazing group of photographers was going to have a 2 day excursion in Utah, I was all in! I grew up in Salt Lake City and have family that lives in Park City. It was a double win to visit family for the holidays and be a part of this awesome workshop.
Awesome snow and family!
An extra bonus was bringing my three kiddos to visit family and play in the snow. Being from the Oregon coast my kids are absolutely enchanted with the idea of playing in powder. I answered question after question about the idea of sinking into powder and getting stuck.
Every day in Utah was packed with fun! It made my heart happy to take my 7 year old boys to snowboard at Brighton in the Big Cottonwood Canyon with my brother. My dad took us there regularly as children and taught us to ski by holding us between his legs on our own skis and praying to the ski gods that we didn’t end up a tangled, yard sale mess on the side of the mountain. Even the hard boiled eggs my dad would bring for lunch in his fanny pack (yes, it’s true!) which at the time I could have passed on, now is an endearing memory of my father. I always wanted lodge food, but there was really nothing better than the warmed eggs with butter and salt.
My brother and I continued on to snowboarding as teenagers and spent a whole lot of time together on the slopes of Brighton. It was amazing to hit the slopes together again and the Utah snow is the best!
Back to The Real Workshop
The workshop was full of enlightening information from photographers Emily Hatch of emeandjacob.com and Haley Nord of haleynordphotography.com. So lucky to learn from these two! The morning was packed full of great information and the afternoon consisted of styled shoots with two fabulous couples.
Flash from the past
My sister was able to join in the fun on day 2. We drove out to the Salt Flats and arrived at a rest stop just before Wendover, Nevada at 7am. Wendover is a little town on the border of Nevada and Utah, in other words in the middle of nowhere. Wendover consists of a few casinos surrounded by mobile homes and trailers where the staff for the casinos live. Besides some pawn shops for the desperate gambler there is nothing else out there. I spent many nights there with family and friends holding our little plastic bucket full of nickels or betting on the dollar black jack tables. I don’t know if either of those things still exist!
The models arrive…….or did they?!
As we waited at the rest stop a gorgeous couple in their wedding gown and tuxedo got out of two separate cars. The couple for the shoot had arrived and looked fabulous. It did seem a little odd that the groom was blindfolded and the bride being presented to him. Ummmm, not the norm for a styled shoot. We sat and watched this couples first look and bridal session unfold. So much emotion and magic!
The real models Christie and Brandon arrived and were so much fun to photograph! The dynamic between them was great. Super playful and beautiful with their striking boho style, they rocked it!
The couple on their actual bridal shoot, Sarah and Juston let us sneak some shots in at the end of their shoot. Despite it being freezing cold and the bride’s poor toes wet from the water and toying with frost bite, they were lovely and amazingly nice to the point of inviting us to their wedding this next weekend. Unbelievable!
After the morning on the Salt Flats, our group ventured to Antelope Island. Surrounded by high desert scenery, some buffalo and snow capped peaks, the workshop finished with truly inspiring and stunning images of Jessi and Ethan, a striking couple in a fairytale landscape.
Loved, loved, loved the workshop! The whole week with family, snow and amazing photographers was exactly what I needed and a perfect way to start 2019. The icing on the cake was an uneventful, (dare I say relaxing?!) plane ride home to Oregon with my children and the moment on the economy parking shuttle snuggled in and listening to my kid’s favorite moments from the trip.
Thanks to all the vendors that made these photo shoots so spectacular!
